Beauty - Beast Finale by *FrostPuma:iconFrostPuma:

BEAUTY & BEAST FINALE
---------

>The Beast:

Who am I now? I thought
flesh was a mask, and I
was trapped inside, was caught
within the lie --
Surely the man was real, the beast was not,
surely my beastly ways were a disguise --
I keep telling myself this, not sure why
I need to. Or if it’s wise . . .
I shall have to get used to it.

>Beauty:

I shall have to get used to it.
Ah, what could I be thinking of?
The prince with handsomeness restored
is not the beast I grew to love.
For years, I know, his face will haunt my sleep,
though I fell in love with the soul inside,
and I know appearance is skin deep.
I shall have to get used to it.

I shall have to get used to it.
That gentle voice that was so rough before;
a growl that I learned to understand,
and will not hear anymore --
Those eyes that shone through his face
with the light of his mind.
I shall miss my hideous friend for a very long time.
I shall have to get used to it.

I shall have to get used to it.
Hands that are fine, in no way resembling
the paws that yearned toward me
yet held back, trembling,
That knew how easily hearts --
like teacups -- could break.
I admired that restraint; but perhaps I admired a mistake.
I shall have to get used to it.

[the sun begins to rise]

>The Beast:

When sunlight warms the forest’s heart, do not be blinded by the day,
The darkness is not lost -- the dark is never lost -- nor has the wildness gone away.
but . . .

>Both:

I shall have to get used to it.

One of a series of poems (working toward an oratorio) based on Jean Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast (La Belle et La Bete, 1946).

Beautiful, one of the most unique takes on the tale I've ever heard :)

Thank you, but I'm just following Cocteau's own comments (and Greta Garbo's, I'm told).

Interesting, I'm really into the Cocteau film, but I didn't catch the correlation. It's still a strong piece and I feel like it deviates enough from Garbo and Cocteau's comments that it doesn't feel stolen. :)

There are more songs I want to write on this theme, but I have not been able to get them the way I want them.

The main one is Beauty, finding herself in love with the beast, being concerned with various possible consequences of a physical relationship, including the nature of their children (if they can have children) and what sort of lives the children might have.

Of course, there are social consequences, too. Could the two of them be happy for the rest of their lives with no-one else around? Who could they invite over? Where could they go together? But her main concern is for the children.

Fascinating! I myself am big into writing about and investigating the story, it's been a big pert of my life since I was very young.

Are you planning on writing any of these ideas out eventually? I would love to see them :)

Eventually, yes. I don't know when they will get done, but I do want to do them.

As you see, I don't check my messages here very often. I hope to improve that....
:iconrosengeist:
Wonderful! I would love to see them some day, if you feel comfortable enough posting them online :)

Lol, that's all right, sometimes it takes a while to get around to them. :)
